"Palenquera", the artwork featured in this apron is a portrait in tribute to the women who walk the streets of the city of Cartagena de Indias offering fresh fruit and tasty coconut and milk sweets. Unmistakable women for their colorful outfits and the characteristic tumbao they have when walking. As one of the characters that give life to the traditional Colombian culture, his work has been transmitted from generation to generation and dates back to the origins of the country.
The “palenqueras” are from San Basilio de Palenque, a town in Bolívar that during the Spanish conquest became the first population of free slaves. Today it reinvents itself in a myriad of expressions typical of its culture that enrich its region and keep its identity alive.
